Faucet Buying Guide

Choosing the faucet that's right for your needs.

Step 1: Determine The Requirements of Your Sink, Countertop or Wall.
There are several different types of faucets. Faucets that are referred to as deck mounted or as workboard faucets, mount either flush with your countertop or sink. These faucets are very common in residential settings but can be used in a commercial setting. Faucets that are referred to as wall mounted or splash mounted, mount against the back splash of a sink or countertop or directly against a wall. Remember it is always a good idea to have a licensed plumber in your area install your new or replacement faucet. Also remember that once a faucet has been installed it cannot be returned. This policy is discussed in our faucet sales policy.

I Need A Deck Mounted / Workboard Faucet:
If you are buying a new faucet or replacing an old faucet you should begin by counting the number of holes in your sink. Typically a sink has two holes to allow for the supply lines to pass through. Some sinks however, may have a single hole and would require a special single hole faucet. Generally a single hole faucet will connect only to a single hot or cold water supply. On our site a faucet will require a sink with two holes, connect to hot and cold supply lines,  unless otherwise specified. If your sink requires a two hole faucet you will need to measure from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole to determine what size faucet you need. Faucets come in two different sizes, 4 inch center and 8 inch center. Instructions for measuring center distance can be found bellow.

I Need A Wall / Splash Mounted Faucet:
If you are replacing an old faucet you should begin by counting the number of holes in your wall. Typically a faucet will require two holes however some may only require a single hole and you would need to purchase a special single hole faucet. Generally a single hole faucet will only connect to a single hot or cold water supply. If you are buying a faucet for new construction you will have the most flexibility as you will be able to have a plumber install your faucet to your specifications without major remodeling. On our site a faucet will require two holes, connect to hot and cold supply lines, unless otherwise specified. If your installation requires a two hole faucet you will need to measure from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole to determine what size faucet you need. Faucets come in two different sizes, 4 inch center and 8 inch center. Instructions for measuring center distance can be found bellow.

Step 2: Determine if there are specific health department regulations in your area.
Many areas have specific Health Department Regulations which must be followed when installing a new faucet. Often when a faucet will be used to wash soiled cookware, utensils, or dishes a special part called a vacuum breaker must either be built into your faucet or installed as an add on to a faucet. A vacuum breaker prevents soiled water from contaminating your fresh water supply. In addition many health departments will require an NSF or CSA approved faucet.

Step 3: Choose the right faucet:
Faucets are available with a variety of different spout options ranging from Double-Jointed to Gooseneck. On our site we offer two manufacture's faucets, Krowne Metal and T&S Brass. Both manufacturers offer comparable products and many of their parts are interchangeable. When choosing a faucet it is less important to focus on brand then it is to find the faucet which meets your needs.*  In general all faucets sold through our website will come with Lever Handles which are easier to operate in a fast paced setting. Additionally, all Krowne Royal Series faucets offer removable cartridge valves.**  All Krowne Royal Series  and all T&S faucets are NSF approved. Be sure to select a faucet which meets the requirements outlined above and remember to view our policy with regard to faucet returns.

    * When buying a Krowne product, check to see if the faucet is in the "Royal Series". If so it is guaranteed to be interchangeable with T&S  products.

** Unless specified as a Krowne Royal series product no other faucets on our site are guaranteed to offer this feature.

Faucet and Plumbing Terms.
  • Deck Mounted: Refers to the way the faucet attaches to a surface. A deck mounted faucet sits flat against a sink or countertop when installed.

  • Dipper Well: Used primarily in ice cream parlors. A dipper well provides a continuous flow of fresh water and is used to wash a serving utensil used for multiple items to prevent cross contamination.

  • Double-Jointed Spout: This is a faucet spout which is jointed allowing for greater flexibility, and longer reach. See picture bellow:

  • Cartridge Valve: A cartridge valve is a pre-assembled part which replaces the valve mechanism of a faucet to allow for the simple repair of a leaky faucet. The faucet handle attaches directly to this mechanism to control the flow of water. Not all faucets support this type of valve mechanism.

  • Centers: Refers to the distance separating the fresh water inlets of a faucet. This distance is measured from the center of the first inlet to the center of the second inlet. See picture bellow:

(This example shows an 8" center faucet)
  • CSA: Abbreviation for Canadian Standards Administration. This organization is a non-profit group serving, business, government, and consumers in Canada by providing standards for food safety and sanitation.

  • Fitting: Broad term which refers to various piping parts such as tees and elbows, etc.

  • Gooseneck Spout: Spout style characterized by a high arching spout. The high-arch design of a gooseneck spout provides ample room for working with and filling large pots or containers. See picture bellow:

  • Inlet: A broad term describing a fitting through which a faucet connects to a fresh water supply.

  • Lever Handle: refers to a faucet handle which resembles a simple lever rather than a knob, etc. See picture bellow:

  • NSF: Abbreviation for National Sanitation Foundation. This organization helps to protect  consumers by certifying  products and writing standards for food, water, and air consumer goods. NSF is an independent none profit organization who's mission is improved public health.

  • NPS: Abbreviation for National Pipe Straight Threads Standard.

  • NPT: Abbreviation for National Pipe Tapered Threads Standard.

  • Seat: The portion of a compression fitting against which the valve presses to stop the flow of water.

  • Shank: The threaded inlet pipes which protrude from the base of a faucet to allow a fresh water supply to be connected.

  • Splash Mounted: Refers to the way the faucet attaches to a surface. A splash mounted faucet sits flat against a wall, sink backsplash, or counter backsplash when installed. However, this type of faucet is primarily intended to be used when mounting a faucet to a sink backsplash.

  • Vacuum Breaker: An anti-siphon device which prevents the backflow of non potable water into the water supply system. For example, if a pre-rinse were left extended into a sink of dirty water, and a siphon effect were to occur, a vacuum breaker would prevent the sink water from traveling back into the fresh water supply system.

  • Wall Mounted: Refers to the way the faucet attaches to a surface. A wall mounted faucet sits flat against a wall, sink backsplash, or counter backsplash when installed.

  • Workboard Faucet: Also known as a deck mount faucet. A workboard faucet is intended to be mounted on a flat surface or work area such as a countertop or sink. Often this type of faucet is used in residential settings though it maybe used in a commercial environment.

Restaurant Equipment World's Faucet Sales Policy.
